The Power of Now: Eckhart Tolle

The biggest challenge I see in my clinic is a lack of understanding of what healing really IS.  There are books written to help people along the way, but even these books are rife with misunderstandings that need immediate clarification.

One such book is the famous The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle .  He suggests that all suffering is the result of not living in the present moment, and that all of our power comes from living in the present.

This is ALL TRUE.  But we must ask ourselves some really important questions.

1.) Why do most people not live in the present moment?
2.) If we are not living in the present moment then what are people doing?

When we do not live in the present moment, we are daydreaming or disassociating

Why do people daydream or disassociate?

The answer is because people do not like their PRESENT lives, because they are in emotional pain, so the only way to cope is by distractions, daydreaming, and disassociating.  So asking people to live in the present moment forces them to feel all the things they are trying to avoid feeling.

The ultimate goal is to live in the present moment, and Eckhart Tolle is technically right about all he says, but doesn`t understand that doing this for most people is going to be too traumatic. The truth about healing is that once you focus on the present moment, then the person becomes aware of their emotional pain, of their physical pain, of the unhappiness that they have felt all along. As liberating as this sounds, it can be overwhelming, and can be too much to face, too soon for most people.

Experiment: For one day, do not phone anybody, do not surf the internet, do not eat, do not watch tv, do not DO anything,  just BE. Now notice how you feel, all you have left is your own emotions to feel, and the pain surfaces.

The balance point is this: we face our inner pain in increments. We live in the present moment in increments and face our pain, as our body can handle it. As the process of healing progresses you will naturally start living more and more in the present moment. But not until then. Living in the present moment fully and completely means you have to have ALL of yourself present with you, including your emotional feelings, to truly BE in the moment.

Living in the present moment is a natural process of HEALING and should not be something you feel you must force yourself to do in the name of being healthy.
